Tawheed of Lordship

Tawheed of Lordship

Ages and ages ago, long before we were born, before human civilization, before the dinosaurs, even before the universe was formed, and anything else that was created there was our Lord, Allah subhana wa ta’ala.

Only He was present when nothing existed, and from that nothing He effortlessly made the creation, until an appointed time will arrive when everything will come to an end and everyone will perish, except Him, and by His will we will be risen again to witness the Last Day. The concept of Allah being our Lord, Creator, Causer of Death, Resurrector, and King of the Last Day ties into the concept of His Oneness of Lordship, i.e. Allah is one and only God.

Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds. [Quran 7:54]

Oneness of Lordship also means there are other accompanying attributes that directly relate to Allah being God that no one else can claim. For example He is the One who nurtures all of creation (animals, birds, plants, people, etc) through His bounty, all the while not needing anything in return. He is the Most High, presiding over His Throne above the creation seeing, hearing, and knowing all and in charge of our affairs.

Say, "Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? Or who controls hearing and sight and who brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living and who arranges [every] matter?" They will say, "Allah," so say, "Then will you not fear Him?" [Quran 10:31]

Assigning anything or anyone Allah’s Lordship is going against the principle of Tawheed. Even our noble prophets warned their people about the idols they worshiped:

Abraham said, "Rather, this - the largest of them [the idols] - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak." So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers." Then they reversed themselves, [saying], "You have already known that these do not speak!" He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all or harm you? [Quran 21:63-65]

There is only one God, Allah, and Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) tried to teach his people that gravely important lesson. The idol-worshipers during his time accepted their man-made gods could not even speak yet they considered them worthy of their attention. They failed to correct their flaws about understanding Allah’s Oneness; however, we can benefit from their shortcomings and recognize Allah is the only One who can and does benefit us, and also continues to speak to us via the Quran.
