Benefits of Tawheed

Benefits of Tawheed

La ilaha illa Allah... a few words that may occasionally slip off our tongues, but these few words have the ability to move mountains, raise the best of nations, and its absense will lead to an end of this world.

Behind its beauty is it can be learnt and narrated so easily, but its real attraction takes shape when we ponder over its meaning, "None has the right to be worshipped, except Allah", and understand its significance like Prophet Musa (Moses) (pbuh) did...

Musa (Moses) said, “O Lord! Teach me something I can remember you and call you upon with!” Allah replies, “O Musa! Say ‘La ilaha illa Allah’. He asks, “But all of your worshippers say this.” Allah replies, “O Musa! If the seven heavens and what is in them other than Me, and the seven earths were on one pan of a scale and La ilaha illa Allah was on the other pan, than La ilaha illa Allah would outweigh them.” [recorded by Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim who graded it sahih]

The overarching theme of our faith is Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) and since the phrase La ilaha illa Allah – none has the right to be worshipped except Allah – clearly exemplifies it, its importance comes as no surprise. However, the narration helps us to realize the virtue and magnitude of those few words in the eyes of our Lord and therefore we can appreciate why He has prohibited the Fire as an eternal abode for those who sincerely believe and practice Tawheed, instead promising them the great prize of Paradise.

“Surely Allah prohibited the Fire from whoever said La ilaha illa Allah, seeking His Face by it.” [Hadith of ‘Itban]
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “Whosever testifies that there is no god but Allah alone without partners, and that Muhammad is His worshipper and Messenger, and that ‘Isa (Jesus) is a worshipper of Allah, His Messenger, His word delivered to Maryam (Mary), and a soul from Him, and that Paradise is true, and that the Fire is true, Allah will admit him to Paradise whatever his deeds may be.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

There will come a Day when everyone who walked upon the earth will stand before their Lord on a flat surface beneath a scorching sun and be held accountable for all they earned. The inhabitants of Paradise and Hell will be separated on that long Day, in the end everything will be come down to our application of Tawheed and the vast Mercy of Allah. The ones who believed and implemented the Oneness of Allah will earn the great reward of Paradise, while the ones who committed zulm (injustice) against Allah, by rejecting His favors, His Greatness, and associating others with Him in worship will also earn their unfortunate fiery destination.

Those who believe and do not mix their faith with zulm (injustice), those will have security, and they are rightly guided. [6:82]

Among the bounties that Allah has showered upon us is sending the Quran and Sunnah of His Messenger (pbuh). They continue to guide the righteous towards La ilaha illa Allah by teaching us about our Creator, informing us to strive and fulfill Tawheed by worshipping Him alone, and to seek His forgiveness for our shortcomings.

I heard Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) saying, ‘Allah said: “… O son of Adam! If you came to Me with mistakes filling the bags of the earth, yet you met Me without associating anything with Me, I would come to you with those bags full of forgiveness.'” [At-Tirmidhi, declared hasan in Sahid al-Jami al-Saghir]

Allah is Al-Ghafoor ul-Raheem, the Oft-Forgiving and Most Merciful. He is waiting to forgive and grant us His Mercy if we preserve Tawheed. Allah also forgives the zulm (injustice) of shirk (associating partners with Allah) if someone repents sincerely and implements the Oneness of Allah, even if he may truly believe it just before his last passing breath – which again highlights the great importance of Tawheed.

To summarize, our discussion has touched upon the following virtues and benefits of Tawheed:

1BENEFIT #1
The numerous rewards Allah grants for Tawheed

2BENEFIT #2
Knowing the virtue of faith in Paradise and the Fire

3BENEFIT #3
Helps us to understand the extent of Allah’s favors

4BENEFIT #4
Allah’s forgiveness and removal of sins because of Tawheed

5BENEFIT #5
The great weight and importance of La ilaha illa Allah

There is one more key benefit of Tawheed, but it is reserved for the one who fulfills it.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “… seventy thousand of my ummah will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment.” [Muslim]

When the companions of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) heard the above statement they started wondering who those people could be. Some thought that maybe they were the Prophet’s (pbuh) companions, others said maybe they were those born into Islam and never committed shirk. The Prophet (pbuh) then clarified the matter:

“They are those who do not seek ruqya, do not follow omens, nor get themselves cauterized, and upon their Lord do they trust.” [Muslim – part of above hadith]

The essence behind above qualities of the special few can be summarized as perfection of Tawheed, where the seventy thousand people will rely fully upon their Lord and trust their affairs with Him. They trusted themselves before Allah and He fulfills their trust by pardoning them and rewarding them with Paradise.

The Day of Judgment will be a harsh long day where the creation will have to answer for their rights and wrongs before Allah. Being fallible creatures our books of deed will in all likelihood contain deeds that we are not proud, some major, some minor, and that is why the reward of not facing the reckoning is so great.

If the seventy thousand seems like a low number, here is additional great news for those to want to perfect Tawheed further illustrating the favors Our Lord bestows upon us:

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “My Lord promised me that seventy thousand of my ummah will enter Paradise without being brought to account or being punished; with each thousand of them will be another seventy thousand, plus three handfuls of the handfuls of my Lord, may He be glorified.” [Musnad of Imaam Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Maajah]
